Artemy Mukhin is a composer who was born in Boston, grew up in Philadelphia, and now lives in New York City. Artemy started taking piano lessons at the age of 5 and began composing soon after. He initially worked on his piano technique and composition skills under the guidance of David Dzubinski, Music Director at the New Jersey School of Music. After moving to New York City at the age of 11, Artemy attended the Prep division at the Mannes School of Music where he was a Composition Honors student of Dr. Steven Sacco. In New York Artemy continued developing his musicianship with the help of jazz pianist William Komaiko and award-winning classical pianist Dr. Pavel Gintov.

Currently Artemy is a sophomore at the Special Music School in New York City where he is pursuing a Composition major under the guidance of Dr. Jared Miller and in collaboration with the Kaufman Music Center. Artemy is an alumnus and post-grad of the New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers (VYC) program and he also participates in the New York Youth Symphony Composition Program.

Being a piano player, Artemy wrote his first compositions for this instrument. However, he later significantly expanded his composer’s toolbox and began writing for orchestra, string quartets, vocalists and many others. In the past three years alone, Artemy has worked with a number of well-known musicians who performed his music. Among them were the renowned pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, soprano Lucy Shelton, International Contemporary Ensemble, PUBLIQuartet, Brooklyn Brass Quintet, and others.

Artemy’s String Quartet has been named a 2017 Honors Composition by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA). It was featured in the Young Composers Concert during the NYSSMA Winter Conference in December 2017. Then in early 2018, Artemy collaborated with Face the Music and VYC at the New York Philharmonic to perform String Quartet and send it as a “musical postcard” to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

Artemy’s Revolving Planet for piano, performed by Benjamin Grosvenor, received an Honorable Mention by NYSSMA in 2018. In addition, this composition was selected by VYC to be sent to Rio de Janeiro as a token of sympathy and solidarity after the disastrous fire at the National Museum of Brazil. In 2019 the recording of Revolving Planet played by Dr. Pavel Gintov received 1st place in the Music category in the SciArtex 2019 Humans in Space Youth Art Competition held in Los Angeles, CA. Artemy’s Melancholy for flute, bassoon, guitar, and trombone received an Honorable Mention by NYSSMA in 2019.

In the Spring of 2019 Artemy’s Blue Hour composition was performed in Lincoln Center’s Geffen Hall and at the David Rubenstein Atrium by New York Philharmonic musicians. Outside of school Artemy has many interests and passions. He is a competitive Squash player, having achieved his highest rankings to date as No.3 in the US boys under 11 division. In his free time Artemy enjoys reading, biking, and going to rock concerts with his older sister. More information about Artemy and samples of his music can be found on his web page http://artemys.art
